Torus Installation at Day One Pasadena

Armory Center for the Arts and Day One Pasadena are pleased the present the temporary outdoor installation of Torus, a variation of Peter Tolkin Architecture’s Dunnage Ball Series. Originally presented at the 2013 Pasadena Earth and Arts Festival, the work is now to be installed at Day One Pasadena at 175 North Euclid Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101.

Peter Tolkin Architecture, with assistance from former employee Leigh Jerrard, have designed Torus — an interactive sculptural installation, 30 feet in diameter, 15 feet tall, and made of of 90 dunnage bags. Like its dynamic predecessor Dunnage Ball, which drew crowds at the 2008 Glow festival in Santa Monica, Torus inspired adults and children alike at the one-day celebration of the earth and the arts. It can now be enjoyed at Day One Pasadena for several weeks. Many thanks to Stopak and Sunrise Manufacturing for their in-kind donation of the dunnage bags.

Local Students Win National Recognition in the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

LOCAL STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL RECOGNITION IN THE 2013 SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS
Young artists and writers join a prestigious list of Awards alumni including Zac Posen, Lena Dunham, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Joyce Carol Oates & Robert Redford

New York, NY — March 25, 2013 — The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the country’s longest-running and most prestigious award and recognition program for creative teenagers, announced its 2013 National Award recipients. Los Angeles Art Region had 5 students awarded national medals from a panel of distinguished judges. The students all submitted their work to the competition through The Armory Center for the Arts.

More than 1,600 of the most talented and ambitious students in grades 7-12, representing 47 U.S. states, as well as students in Washington, DC and American schools abroad, were chosen to receive national medals. Students' works were blindly adjudicated, first locally through the 116 affiliates of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the presenting nonprofit of the Awards, and then nationally by panels of judges comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators, and arts professionals. This year’s list of jurors included Edwidge Danticat, Myla Goldberg, Kurt Andersen, Althea Harper, Red Grooms, and Andres Serrano. Works were judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal vision or voice. Teachers of national winners were also recognized with awards.

2013 marks the 90th anniversary of the Awards, and this year’s program attracted more participants than ever before. More than 230,000 submissions were received in 28 categories, including dramatic script, journalism, humor, novel-writing, science-fiction, as well as painting, sculpture, photography, fashion design, film and animation, and video game design, among others.

In the Los Angeles Art Region, the following students were honored:

•	Mikhaila Quezada-Freda, Westridge School, Pasadena, Gold Key and American Visions Nominee, Mixed Media and Sculpture

•	Rafaella Barbosa, Rolling Hills Preparatory, San Pedro, Gold Key, Photography

•	Kai Blatt, Marlborough School, Los Angeles, Gold Key, Digital Art

•	Connor Gewirtz, Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Santa Monica, Gold Key, Drawing

•	Cole Mercier,	L.A. County High School for the Arts, Los Angeles, Gold Key, Digital Art

A complete list of winners across the United States is available here.

“This 90th year of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards demonstrates just how vital the program is to America’s creative young people,” said Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. “We received more entries than ever before, and the depth of talent from all across the country is astounding. In some cases, an Award and its attendant scholarships can make the difference between whether or not a young writer or artist attends college. We are privileged to provide recognition and assistance to these deserving young people, and to celebrate the importance of arts education in American cultural life.”

This year’s National Celebration will kick off in New York City on May 31 when the Empire State Building will be illuminated in gold, and the LED super signs at 1515 Broadway in Times Square will feature the Awards throughout the day. That evening, national gold medal level winners will be honored onstage at a special ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall. In addition, for the first time ever, in celebration of the 90th Anniversary, the ceremony will be webcast live from Carnegie Hall. Select Award-winning art and writing will be exhibited at Parsons The New School for Design and the Pratt Manhattan Gallery through June 15, 2013. The exhibition and accompanying public programs are co-sponsored by the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design.

Alumni of the Scholastic Awards have gone on to continue their education at many of the top colleges and universities across the country, including Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the School of Visual Arts, Parsons The New School for Design, Carnegie Mellon University and Columbia University. Distinguished alumni include Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, Robert Redford, Richard Avedon, Zac Posen, Joyce Carol Oates, Lena Dunham, Cy Twombly, John Baldessari, John Updike, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Stephen King and Red Grooms.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is generously supported by Scholastic Inc., the Maurice R. Robinson Fund, The New York Times, the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Command Web Offset Co., the AMD Foundation, Blick Art Materials, the National Endowment for the Arts, 3D Systems, New York Life, Bloomberg L.P., Ovation, Amazon.com, the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust, the Bernstein Family Foundation, Duck Tape®, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and contributions from numerous other individual, foundation, and corporate funders.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

It is with great sadness that we share the tragic news that ArtSlant co-founder, CEO, and Editor-in-Chief Georgia Fee passed away on Saturday evening, December 8th, in Los Angeles. Her last few days were spent with friends and family, and she was at peace.

Georgia Fee was born in 1951 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received her MFA from California State University, Los Angeles in 1997. She was involved with numerous arts organizations including LA Freewaves Media Festival and Foundation for Art Research, Los Angeles. Georgia and her partner Catherine Ruggles made their home in Los Angeles, New York, and in her favorite city of all: Paris.

Georgia made significant contributions to the Armory’s mission of building upon the power of art to transform lives and communities. She began her tenure at the Armory as a teaching artist fellow in 1997. From 1998-2004, Georgia taught several arts-based programs for the Armory throughout Pasadena. She also coordinated our Schools Programs and organized a highly-successful art career day for high school students. She was a stellar teaching-artist and served as a mentor to emerging artists new to the field of arts education. She will be profoundly missed by her friends at the Armory.

There will be a memorial for Georgia on Saturday, January 12th at 11:00am at The Victorian, located at 2640 Main Street in Santa Monica.
Mural Project completed by Washington Middle School and Armory Center for the Arts

The Armory is excited to announce that current 7th and 8th graders at Washington Middle School in association with Armory Teaching Artists recently completed the design and execution of a large wall mosaic using Venetian glass, installed in the main entrance of the school. This is the second Armory-led large-scale public art project completed at the school in the 2011-2012 school year.

Students worked on the mural with artist José Antonio Aguirre to study public art, with an emphasis on elements of art and principals of design, environment and placement, scale and proportion, form and content, use of materials and expressive qualities. Together, they successfully designed a work that expresses the cultural identity of their generation and community. The mural was unveiled in a ceremony on June 6, 2012. José Antonio Aguirre (born in Mexico City) has studied and lived in the United States since 1976. He obtained a visual arts degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in1982, and a Master of Fine Arts at California Institute of the Arts in 1990. Aguirre has designed and fabricated over 35 permanent works of public art for civic art programs, educational and private developer’s projects in Southern California, Chicago and Mexico.

To view more images of the mural and our other public art projects at Washingtom Middle Scholl, please view this Flickr page.

Artist-in-Residence Gregory Michael Hernandez @ The Artist Studio One Colorado

The Artist Studio at One Colorado presents Gregory Michael Hernandez, Artist-in-Residence.

Pasadena, CA – Armory Center for the Arts and One Colorado present Los Angeles-based artist Gregory Michael Hernandez as the Artist-in-Residence at The Artist Studio at One Colorado. The residency will run from July 2 through October 27, 2012. The Artist Studio, located at 24 Smith Alley in Pasadena’s One Colorado complex, is an interactive artist space in which visitors are invited to engage with artists as they work. While in residence, Gregory Michael Hernandez will maintain open studio hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10am-5pm, and on Saturdays from 11am-5pm. Studio visits are free and open to the public. Armory and One Colorado are pleased to continue their over ten- year collaboration presenting innovative programs that introduce the arts and artists into daily life.

In his residency entitled A Bridge Between Landscapes, Gregory Michael Hernandez will create hybrid forms, images, and projects that metaphorically bridge two or more locations, combining his working materials and influences and mingling images from both desert wilderness and urban built environments. While at work in The Artist Studio Hernandez will be preparing a solo exhibition at Roberts and Tilton Gallery, Culver City in 2013.

Hernandez considers his work to be an ongoing, slow evolution from one body of work to the next, using preceding projects as conceptual stepping stones for those in the future. In accordance with his mission to construct a grander, hybrid art form, visitors will have the opportunity to both experience and witness this interactive process. Therefore, The Artist Studio will be used as an intersection between a gallery, a workshop, and a think-tank for the germination of future projects. Hernandez invites discussions with other artists and the public in order to cultivate inspiration for future work.

In conjunction with his residency Hernandez will make his signature Captive Universe pieces available to visitors. These photographic collages are comprised of 26 individual photographs that, when assembled, offer a panoramic, three-dimensional expansion of Renaissance one-point perspective. Visitors will be provided materials to cut, fold, and shape these photo-globes, which may then be taken home or given to the artist to be integrated into a future exhibition.

Gregory Michael Hernandez lives and works in Los Angeles. A graduate of Biola University, Hernandez has had solo shows at LAX Art and Emma Gray Headquarters, both in Culver City. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Torrance Art Museum, Gallery 727, and the L.A. Municipal Gallery. The artist is a 2011 recipient of the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists and received a grant from the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department for a project at LAX Airport. He is preparing for an upcoming solo exhibition at Roberts and Tilton Gallery, Culver City, in 2013.

Steven Bankhead Stables Napoleon's Horse into Northwest Pasadena

Armory Center for the Arts is pleased to present Eighteenth Brumaire, a large-scale sculpture by Los Angeles-based artist Steven Bankhead. The temporary public work will be on display through May, 2013. Bankhead’s monumental sculpture, which utilizes the materials of billboard construction, stands prominently in the garden of the Madison Neighborhood Casita, 805 N. Madison Ave. Pasadena, California. A public reception at the Casita on Sunday, June 24th will feature refreshments, music by DJ Tailspin, and free pulled-pork barbecue — prepared by the artist (3-6pm).

History repeats itself*

In 1801, Napoleon commissioned Jacques-Louis David to create a painting depicting him crossing the Alps in order to valorize his 1799 coup d’état (also known as The Eighteenth Brumaire, regarded by some scholars as the beginning of 20th century fascism). David’s famous painting entitled Napoleon Crossing the Saint-Bernard Pass (1801) is a romanticized depiction of valiant Napoleon astride a white stallion rearing back in victory. This work first caught Steven Bankhead’s attention when it was used to advertise the exhibition Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile at the Getty Center in 2005. The artist’s interest in semiotics and sign processes led him to question how the meaning of something can evolve and change over time – how a work of French imperialist propaganda can be equally provocative to contemporary viewers when the semantics are vastly different.

Bankhead’s response, entitled Eighteenth Brumaire, is a flattened, monumental, equestrian sculpture standing nearly ten feet tall and consisting of steel armature, plywood, and printed image – all the constructs of a billboard sign. The work represents David’s horse, removed from its surroundings with most of Napoleon cut out as well. With a tongue-in-cheek flair, Bankhead addresses American capitalism/imperialism by removing the very figure that symbolizes domination (Napoleon) and leaves a riderless horse – what many Americans deem an emblem of freedom.

The meaning of an object is often justified by its chosen location. Accordingly, the work was first displayed on the rooftop of Steve Turner Contemporary on Wilshire Boulevard, across from Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to elicit a dialogue about the Getty’s opulence during its Pacific Standard Time campaign throughout Southern California in 2010, following the global financial crisis. By relocating the work to Pasadena’s Madison Neighborhood Casita in 2012, Bankhead once again challenges the viewer to question how location, in this case, can enlighten the potential for new meaning.

*Karl Marx made reference to The Eighteenth Brumaire in his famous essay that included the frequently quoted passage that history repeats itself “first as tragedy, then as farce.”

Biography

Steven Bankhead’s project-based work is guided by a principal interest in signs and sign processes. He often explores the push/pull that exists between art and advertising – in essence, how one informs the other. It is his belief that all paintings are signs; forms of communication between the artist and the viewer. Born in 1971 in Augusta, Georgia, Steven Bankhead earned a BFA at Auburn University and an MFA at Otis College of Art and Design (2001). He has had solo exhibitions at Emma Gray HQ, Los Angeles (2011); Circus Gallery, Los Angeles (2008 & 2010); and at Galerie Andreas Binder, Munich (2009).

Join us on Wednesday, June 6th at 7pm for the final Big City Forum of this season.

This forum will explore how photographers influence how we view public and social space. Part of this will explore how photographers engage the urban landscape of Southern California in both objective and metaphorical ways and how these images inscribe the way we look at Los Angeles, from the larger scope of the urban spread to the in-between, marginal spaces. Featuring Peter Holzhauer, Alia Malley, and Monica Nouwens, moderated by Joshua Machat, special projects coordinator, Getty Research Institute.

Peter Holzhauer is a Los Angeles-based photographer and faculty member of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts. After studying at the Pratt Institute, NY and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Holzhauer received his BFA from the Art Institute of Boston and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, the Boston Athenaeum, the George Eastman House, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Newark Museum, and have been featured in recent exhibitions at the Night Gallery and the Luckman Gallery, both in LA, and the Fred Torres Collections in New York. See http://peterholzhauer.com/.

Alia Malley was born in La Jolla, CA and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Malley has a BA in Critical Studies from the University of Southern California and an MFA from the University of California, Riverside. Malley’s work has been in many solo and group exhibitions including, most recently, A Cavalier in Sight of a Village and Southland, both at the Sam Lee Gallery, Los Angeles, as well as at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art; the Riverside Art Museum, CA; CENTER, Santa Fe; and POST, Los Angeles. Malley is the recipient of many awards including the CENTER Dealer’s Choice Award and the Merck Prize. See http://www.aliamalley.com/index.html.

Monica Nouwens is a Dutch photographer and video artist who came to Los Angeles on an exchange program with California Institute of Arts after completing a postgraduate fellowship in Art Media Studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Nouwen’s solo show Rubbernecking was exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam and her work has also shown at Annie Wharton, Los Angeles, Netherlands Photography Museum Rotterdam, Netherlands Architecture Institute, Stedelijk Museum Helmond, Gallery Paul Andriesse in Amsterdam, and in London’s Trafalgar Square for World Aids Day.
About Big City Forum

Big City Forum is an interdisciplinary project that facilitates the exchange of ideas through gatherings, symposiums, exhibitions, and special events that provide access to forward-thinking creative projects. As an incubator of ideas and a generator for creative capital, it promotes the arts and imagination as powerful tools for community and civic transformation. In addition it seeks new ways to map and understand what acts of imagination mean to people and places. By bringing together creative visionaries and community/civic leaders, Big City Forum aims to build a platform for collaboration and partnerships that promote a more active sense of cultural vitality and engagement.

On display at the Armory

The Armory’s lead exhibition, Accidents in Abstract Painting, the Armory, is a solo exhibition by Richard Jackson. It will feature the detritus and video documentation of an epic outdoor spectacle in which the artist crashed a 15’ model military jet, filled with paint, into a 19’ wall that read “accidents in abstract painting.” Also on display will be Jackson’s installation The War Room (2006-‘07), until now exhibited only once, and never in the Los Angeles area. By exhibiting the two installations side by side, Jackson reflects upon the Pasadena Armory's history as a repository for military accoutrements, confronting its current function as a contemporary arts center. The exhibition will be up though 12 June.

Also on display will be DANCE, OPERA, DRAW, an exhibition of a new work by Jocelyn Foye in the Armory’s Mezzanine East gallery and Please Please Please, recent photographs, photograms, and text by Nicholas Grider in Mezzanine West. Both shows run 12 February through 13 May. The Armory’s Pasadena Art Alliance Gallery will feature Music for Hoarders, video documentation by Dawn Kasper, through 12 June. In the Community Room will be a group show entitled Fantastic Scenarios of new work by students from the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design, from 12 February through 15 April.

Fallen Fruit will present one of its signature Public Fruit Jams throughout the festival. The public is invited to bring homegrown or “found” public fruit and join in this community-building jam-making art experience.

Use the Metro Gold Line to come to the festival and show your Metro pass at the transportation booth to receive an Earth Day reusable bag, while supplies last. Or join the 5.7-mile Earth and Arts Festival Bike Ride through town, led by C.I.C.L.E. Perfect for riders of all ages and skill levels, the guided tour will showcase the city’s safe bike routes and some of the city’s best green buildings.

Start your weekend early with a free Earth Day film screening on Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Park’s outdoor Levitt Pavilion.

A set of benches were recently created by two groups of 7th grade students who participated in the Armory’s visual art classes offered at Washington Middle School during the fall semester 2011. Guest Teaching Artist, Stan Edmonson, worked with the students in developing ideas that would reflect their perceptions and feelings about their school through photography and collages. The creation of a public art piece was to develop students’ artistic skills, learn about developing a project from conception to execution while beautifying the school environment to create a legacy for the school.

The Artist Studio at One Colorado presents Eve Fowler, Artist-in-Residence to launch on ArtNight Pasadena

The Artist Studio at One Colorado presents Eve Fowler, Artist-in-Residence to launch on ArtNight Pasadena.

Pasadena, CA – Armory Center for the Arts and One Colorado present Los Angeles-based artist Eve Fowler as the Artist-in-Residence for The Artist Studio at One Colorado. The residency starts on March 9, coinciding with Pasadena’s ArtNight, a city wide arts festival, and runs through June 10. The Artist Studio, located at 24 Smith Alley in Pasadena’s One Colorado complex, is an interactive artist space in which visitors are invited to engage with artists as they work. While in residence, Eve Fowler will maintain open studio hours on Saturdays 12p – 5p, Thursdays 12p – 6p, and Tuesdays 11a – 8p. Studio visits are free and open to the public. Armory and One Colorado are pleased to continue their over ten year collaboration presenting innovative programs that introduce the arts and artists into daily life.

Throughout her three-month residency, Fowler will focus on creating a new series of text-based works inspired from Gertrude Stein's radically experimental novel Tender Buttons. By departing from conventional meaning, grammar, and syntax, Stein captured and revealed moments of consciousness independent of conventional understanding of time and memory. In the spirit of Stein’s decisive ambiguity, Fowler creates artworks that quote from the novel in alternative forms and contexts, broadening the typical method of delivery – the bound book, read in private – of Stein’s text. Fowler has developed a prosaic approach to exhibiting the work by printing quotes from the novel – such as "Very different but much more" or "A difference of very little difference" – on common silkscreen posters, the type that typically advertise concerts, boxing matches, and other events. These familiar posters – "A narrative of like and like it,” as Stein once said – can be seen on city street corners, light poles, and hurricane fencing surrounding empty lots. Now, nearly 100 years after the publication of Tender Buttons shocked Victorian sensibilities, Fowler takes Stein’s invitation to play with language further, like what Stein called “A spectacle and nothing strange.”

In conjunction with her residency, Fowler will install a reading room at the entrance of the studio where visitors are welcome to browse through a selection of works from her library as well as the libraries of friends, artists, writers, and librarians. Live readings by a selection of local writers will be scheduled throughout the residency. A schedule is available on the Armory website www.armoryarts.org.

Eve Fowler lives and works in Los Angeles. A graduate of Temple University (BA, 1986) and Yale University (MFA, 1992), Fowler is co-founder of Artist Curated Projects (ACP) in Los Angeles, which was the subject of a dynamic group exhibition she organized (with ACP co-founder Lucas Michael) at Armory last autumn. Fowler has had solo shows at Horton Gallery and Julie Saul Gallery, both in New York, and Thomas Solomon Gallery in Los Angeles. She has participated in group exhibitions at Tulane University Art Gallery in New Orleans and New Langton Arts and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, both in San Francisco. Her work is in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the New Museum, New York; and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Fowler’s work was included in the California Biennial at Orange County Museum in 2010 and will be included in a group show at Lora Reynolds Gallery in Austin, Texas in April 2012.
