Communications Intern
Under the guidance of the Armory’s Communications Director, Sophia
Bicos, the Communications Intern will participate in the design, writing
and creation of the Armory’s in-house marketing and publicity materials,
including banners, postcards, fliers and brochures. The ideal candidate
should have strong writing skills and experience in graphic design as well
as image-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. Photography skills are
also a plus. The intern will also assist the Communications Director in
the day-to-day management of the Armory’s publicity and marketing
operations.
This internship will
offer the selected undergraduate student the opportunity to:
- Work
one-on-one with the Armory's Communications Director in managing
all aspects of the organization’s marketing and publicity needs
- Gain
hands-on experience in designing and writing in-house marketing materials
for the Armory’s Gallery and Education programs
- Gain
hands-on experience photographing and documenting the Armory’s
Gallery and Education programs
- Interact with
outside design and press professionals
- Gain understanding
of and experience in the day-to-day workings of a multi-disciplinary
community-based arts organization
Duties and Responsibilities: The
Communications Intern will assist the Communications Director with:
- Designing,
writing and producing all in-house marketing materials, including
newsletters, web pages, banners, postcards, fliers and brochures
- Creating
a cohesive look for all publications
- Composing copy
for marketing materials
- Photographing
Armory programs for use in printed materials
- Composing and
disseminating press releases
- Communicating
with media personnel
- Copying, compiling
and organizing press clippings
- Organizing marketing
department current and archival files
Attendance at meetings
sponsored by the Getty Grant Program and completion of internship evaluation
forms is also required.
According to the
Getty grant program, “This
internship opportunity is intended for members of groups underrepresented
in the professions related to museums and the visual arts: individuals
of African-American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American or Pacific
Islander descent. Each intern candidate must meet these initial eligibility
criteria. The candidate must also: (1) be a current enrolled undergraduate
and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2008; (2)
She/he will not graduate before December 2008; (3) She/he must be a
resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County.”
This
is a 40 hours per week internship for ten weeks during this summer.
Salary for the entire ten weeks is $ 3,500.

2008 Gallery Intern
Under the guidance of the Gallery Exhibitions Manager, Sinead Finnerty-Pyne,
the Gallery Intern will participate in the implementation and
planning of contemporary art exhibitions in the Armory’s
main gallery, mezzanine gallery and community room gallery, as
well as in locations out in the community. The Gallery internship
will offer the selected undergraduate student the opportunity
to:
- Receive
training from the Armory's exhibition program staff
- Gain
hands-on experience in arts administration and art exhibition organization
- Organize
an exhibition for World AIDS Day (December 1)
- Interact
with professional artists who are participating in exhibitions
- Gain
understanding of and experience in the daily workings of a multi-disciplinary
community-based arts organization
- Interact with
gallery visitors
Program Description:
The Armory’s Gallery Program presents the work of contemporary
visual and performing artists with a specific emphasis on emerging
artists from the Southern California area. The Armory is unique among
visual arts organizations and museums in its dual focus on presenting
the work of professional artists and encouraging new audiences to create
and explore the visual arts.
Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Gallery
Intern will include assisting the Gallery Exhibition Manager and the
Director of Gallery Programs with:
- Preparation
of written exhibition materials, condition reports, labels, and lighting
- Installation
of the Projects Room, an interactive space adjacent to the Gallery
which may include books, videos, and other background and historical
information about art, as well as a participatory project for visitors
- Coordinating
exhibition-related events, which includes conversations with artists
and curators, and related lectures and/or performances
- Assisting
in group tours of the exhibition
- Participating
in the on-going evaluation of the Gallery Program, which includes
compiling and organizing program participation statistics
Supervision and Training:The
Gallery Intern will report directly to the Gallery Exhibition Manager
who will be responsible for his or her supervision and training.
The
Gallery Intern will receive training in: exhibition planning, evaluation,
preparation of didactic materials, working with constituencies that
are diverse in age and cultural background; administrative procedures;
and interacting with artists who work in a variety of media.
The Gallery
Intern will have a designated workspace in or near the Gallery Exhibition
Manager’s office, including his or her own desk, with access
to a telephone, computer, and other office equipment.
Attendance at

Studio Intern
Under the guidance of the Director of Studio Programs, Carrie Whitney,
the Studio Intern will participate in the planning, registration and
implementation of workshops taught by the Armory’s faculty of professional
artists. Each summer, the Armory offers more than 250 different classes
in a variety of media, for all levels of ability, for children ages 3-11,
youth ages 12-18 (Art High), and adults.
The Studio internship will offer the selected undergraduate student
the opportunity to:
- Receive training
from the Armory's educational and artistic program staff and gain
valuable experience in arts administration and arts education.
- Interact with the
professional artists who comprise the Armory's teaching staff.
- Work
with diverse populations who participate in the programs.
- Gain understanding
of and experience in the daily working of a multi-disciplinary community-based
arts organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Studio Intern will include assisting the
Program Director, 30 faculty members, the Studio registrar, the Art
High manager and the Studio coordinator in the daily management of
this very large and highly attended program. The duties include:
- Maintaining
a calendar of class dates for teachers and teacher’s assistant
assignments.
- Accepting
registrations and entering registration data into systems.
- Creating
student sign-in and sign-out sheets
- Participating
in the on-going evaluation of the Studio Program, which includes
compiling and organizing program participation statistics and updating
class rosters.
- Distributing,
collecting and evaluating participant survey forms;
- Acting as
liaison between Director of Studio Programs and studio faculty.
- Observing
faculty (artist teachers and their assistants) as they instruct,
supervise, and encourage class participants.
- Interacting with
and assisting participants in their class activities.
- Assisting
Studio coordinator with receiving, distributing, and delivering necessary
art supplies to classes. • Assist in supervision of volunteers
for classes.
- Assist the Studio
coordinator in maintaining an organized and active studio space.
- Assist the Art
High Manager with Art High program and classes.
- Supervising participants
in breaks between art classes.
- Operating office
equipment (copier, fax machine, etc.) as necessary
Supervision and
Training:The Studio Intern will report directly to the Director
of Studio Programs, who will be responsible for his or her supervision

development, program evaluation, working with constituencies that are
diverse in age and cultural background, customer relations, administrative

Artists/Educators
(Part-time positions)
The Armory is seeking qualified professional artists with teaching experience
to instruct children in one or more of our programs: Studio, Community
and Schools. We are looking for artists that work with a variety of media
such as drawing and painting, photography, printmaking, video, installation,
ceramics or sculpture.
Requirements: Teaching experience with children required; MFA
preferred.
