The Universe: Contemporary Art & The Cosmos

Eight cultural institutions presented The Universe, a multicultural, multimedia exploration of the cosmos as interpreted by artists and scientists throughout the centuries. Exhibitions, performances, workshops, gallery talks and panel discussions offered an interdisciplinary study of the universe and our attempts to understand our place within it. The focus on the universe reflects the importance of Pasadena as a center for the study of science and the arts.

The concept of The Universe evolved from a unique collaboration that began in 1998 among a number of Pasadena institutions—Armory Center for the Arts, Art Center College of Design, Norton Simon Museum, One Colorado and Southwest Chamber Music and then expanded to include the California Institute of Technology, Huntington Library, and Pacific Asia Museum.

The Armory exhibition Contemporary Art & The Cosmos featured the work of Carl Cheng, Dorthea Rockburne, Edward Ruscha, James Rosenquist, Kim Abeles, Linda Connor, Robert Rauschenberg, Rockne Krebs, and Vija Celmins.
