New Works, New Spaces

The Armory has just completed a major renovation and it opens with an exhibition that celebrates the new and revitalized space. Titled New Works, New Spaces, for this exhibition 11 contemporary Southern California artists were commissioned to create new works of installation art for the transformed Armory building.

A number of the works are specifically created for unusual areas throughout the Armory, not only in the Gallery. Michael C. McMillen, for example, has assembled an environment below a glass floor in the Armory's entrance hall. Utilizing old clothes to make her piece, Jan Mulfinger has developed an installation that sits on top of the 30-foot-high Armory skylights. Other examples of art in unusual spaces during the Armory's opening exhibition include Deborah Aschheim's piece which is the first installation ever to be presented in the Balcony Gallery; and Steve Roden has put together a sound installation for the front of the building that visitors hear as they enter to see the exhibition.
