Through August 31
The
exhibit presents a diversity of photographic expressions by 15 traditional
and contemporary Mexican photographers from different generations,
integrated by 75 photographs selected by the National System of
Creators from the Mexican National Council for Culture and the Arts
(CONACULTA). These photographers come from a rich tradition of photography
in Mexico. Since the early part of this century, photography in
Mexico has been dominated by a style reminiscent of photojournalism.
In the last two decades experimental approaches have contributed
tremendously to the evolution of photography in Mexico.
Whether
traditional or contemporary, Mexican photographers are frequently
linked by similar iconography and concerns as they aim to create
work relevant to the complex culture in which they live. Their work
refers to issues ranging from postmodernism, to human dignity, to
the value of the natural world. These photographers draw freely
from their rich history, exploring identity, spirituality and the
current state of Mexican society. Photographers included are Manuel
Álvarez Bravo, Yolanda Andrade, Daisy Ascher, Rogelio Cuellar-Márquez,
Gabriel Figueroa, Héctor García, Flor Garduño,
Lourdes Grobet, José Hernández-Claire, Graciela Iturbide,
Paulina Lavista, Pablo Ortíz Monasterio, Rubén Ortíz
Torres, Walter Reuter, and Armando Salas Portugal.
