This
group exhibition explores the slang term "ghetto-fabulous"
as the modern version of the phrase "black is beautiful."
As a ghetto is interpreted to be a black slum, the oxymoronic term
validates this slum--the failure of a government-constructed space.
Because ghetto-dwellers are portrayed as the main force who maintain
this culture of poverty, the choice in ghetto-fabulous is the choice
to claim the ghetto space and own it instead of being a victim to
it. Artists will address how something becomes ghetto-fabulous,
how the term is mobile and not just used in the black community,
and how the term can fail. Possible artists include Edgar Arcenaux,
Mark Bradford, Lavaille Campbell, Jane Castillo, Ian Dale, Michael
Garnes, Roz Myles, and Miyo Stevens.
