| Materials
and Nature: Echiko Ohira and Minoru Ohira
December 2, 2006 – February 25, 2007
Opening reception, Friday, December 1, 7–9 p.m.
Although native to Japan, Echiko Ohira and Minoru Ohira have lived
in Pasadena for fifteen years. Both artists explore three-dimensional
possibilities of simple materials made from trees. Minoru often
uses cast-off pieces of wood such as fragments of shingles or small
wood blocks that he combines by the hundreds into subtle organic
shapes. Echiko uses craft paper, which she often stains in brilliant
reds or deep blacks, and assembles them into multi-layered large-scaled
forms or wall-mounted geometries. Their resulting works of art become
metaphors for natural forms. The artists drawings will also be included
in the exhibition. Jay Belloli, curator.
