Armory Public View: Carlos Mollura
September 10 – November 5
Opening reception, Saturday, September 9, 7–9 p.m.

The Armory is pleased to announce the launch of Armory Public View, an experimental series dedicated to the commissioning and presentation of large temporary site-specific art installations that challenge conventional notions about art in urban spaces. Armory Public View projects will occupy spaces in and around One Colorado, an outdoor public center in Old Pasadena that includes a large courtyard, alleys, historic Victorian buildings, shops, restaurants and offices. This program begins with a sculptural installation by Carlos Mollura. His inflated Polyurethane sculptures, scaled to echo various architectural details in One Colorado buildings, boldly occupy architectural spaces throughout the site. The work simultaneously obscures or highlights empty spaces in or between buildings while reshaping them with inflated forms. By using black and translucent white Polyurethane “inflatables,” visitors experience different qualities of the spaces explored by the artist. Mollura also works on a variety of scales from small pieces in planters to large-scale works filling the top sections of an alley. Armory Public View continues in Spring 2007 with an installation by Daniel Buren.
