Over Your Head
Touch-Up; Installation by Gina Kuraner
In
response to the nostalgic turn-of-the-century look of One Colorado's
brick buildings, Gina Kuraner suspends ironing boards belly-up,
spanning the 15-foot Miller Alley. There are about 18 of these ironing
boards extending out from four open upper-story windows on one side
to the wall on the other side. The piece comments on the recent
gentrification of downtown Pasadena and the mechanization of the
clothing industry by referring to clotheslines and domesticity.
Kuraner says the installation "offers a bridge of old traditional
chores and duties that still linger as we live in a contemporary
light press or touch-up culture."Art Over Your Head is a collaboration
between Armory Center for the Arts and One Colorado/Old Pasadena
to encourage site specific art in the courtyard and alleys of One
Colorado, with a twist: installations must be a minimum of eight-feet
over head. Artists are selected by a jury process and their work
is exhibited for a several months. For more information about One
Colorado, visit www.onecolorado.net
This
collaboration is made possible by the generosity of One Colorado,
Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Pasadena Cultural
Affairs Division and the Pasadena Arts Commission, and Wallace-Reader's
Digest Funds.
