Artists & Social Engagement

Opening reception, Saturday, June 23, 7-9 p.m.
This exhibition features artists who teach or have taught in the
Armory’s art education programs and whose art explores engagement
with social issues. The artists have been touched by theirpassion
for socially relevant themes, and by their experiences teaching
art to children and youth. Artists included in the exhibition are
Kim Abeles, Edgar Arceneaux, Lynne Berman, Nancy Buchanan, Bia
Gayotto, Joel Glassman, Olga Koumoundouros, Rodney McMillian, Katherine
Ng, Mark Niblock-Smith, Davis & Davis, Ed Coolidge, Shirley
Tse, and Liz Young. On Saturday, July 28th at 8 p.m. there will
be a special public reading by socially active writers Riua Akinshegun
and Gloria Alvarez, both of whom have taught at the Armory. "Use
Value" by Nancy Buchanan and Carolyn Potter, will incorporate
visitors' donations of the following, which will form a visual
display, and be distributed to local charities including AIDS Service
Center (infants and babies), All Saints Church (homeless meal program),
and My Friend's Place (helping homeless teens):
Shoes (especially larger men's sizes) and socks; Clothing (especially
larger men's sizes); Belts, bras, Books and magazines of all reading
levels; Backpacks, School Supplies: Book Bags, Binders, Paper,
Pens, composition books; Datebooks and Calendars; Hygiene Supplies
(travel size shampoo, razors, toothbrushes, deodorant); Art Supplies
(paint, crayons, construction paper, art pencils, glue, glitter,
yarn, sketchpads); Board Games, Canned food such as tuna, chili,
soups, vienna sausages, fruit, and vegetable; razors, small size
toiletries, men's socks; new baby things, diapers, formula, wipes,
etc.
The
show is organized by Noel Korten, artist and former Director
of Exhibitions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. On view
in the Caldwell Gallery.
