2017 Events

Present: Future Tense is an exhibition of work by students enrolled in the Academy for Creative Industries at Marshall Fundamental School. The work is the result of students answering the question "What are you excited and/or fearful for/of when you think about the future?" Their answers are as diverse as the students themselves. The themes range from excitement for college and the infinite possibilities of adolescent freedom, to fear for the environmental, social and political issues of a possible dystopian horizon. Whether the young artists make use of metaphor or narrative, the work spectrum spreads even more with the wide-ranging approaches of geometric abstraction and juxtaposition, to name a few. Multifarious may best describe the work, but the thread that connects this work are the emotions that connects us all when staring at the future.

Present: Future Tense is an exploration of modern collage (making use of traditional art techniques), current digital applications, and modern modes of production. The work is firmly grounded in the realm of fine art while freely borrowing from the world of graphic design and 3D printing. The genre blending enticed some artists to experiment with virtual assemblage, resulting in 3D-printed sculpture and laser-cut relief. These works stand as a counterpoint to the more traditional mixed media work. Together these works present a balanced cross-section of the thoughts of high school students.

Join us for an opening reception with the artsits on Saturday February 4, from 3-5 pm. The Armory's Community Room gallery is opem Tuesdays through Sundays, 12-5 pm. Admission is always free.
