art center professional development

The Armory's Professional Development program provides training and opportunities to gain experience in arts education for artists, new and in-service classroom teachers, as well as teaching fellowships for graduate and post graduate students. Many of the participants gain direct experience through working and training in Armory programs. Participants are also offered training seminars, one-on-one mentoring, peer observations and guest artist lectures.

• Professional Development for Artists — This training program helps Armory artists develop teaching skills and knowledge through workshops, seminars, peer coaching and one-on-one mentoring opportunities. All Armory faculty members are encouraged to attend these sessions to further develop their teaching methods.

• Professional Development for Teachers — This program is designed to teach pre-service and in-service classroom teachers how to incorporate the arts into their teaching practice. Through a partnership with Cal State Los Angeles and Dominguez Hills, the Armory offers two courses; Visual Literacy in the Arts, and Art and Music Methods.

• Teaching Fellowships — This program is an intensive nine month training and teaching program for graduate and post-graduate art students focusing on the development of innovative touring and teaching techniques within the context of a contemporary exhibition space. As part of their training the Fellows receive classroom management skills; they learn how to develop lesson plans based on themes presented in exhibitions; they receive one-on-one mentoring with experienced Armory artist/educators; and they are trained to bring their own artistic practice into an educational setting.

In partnership with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Armory is proud to be able to add a new training program to its Professional Development offerings. The Development Training Program is provided for countywide administrators of visual and performing arts organizations in order to help these organizations understand how their programs can and do support California State Content Standards.
