Summer 2008 Schedule
Week 6: August 4- August 8

The cost of each class is $85. Cost for members is $76, unless otherwise noted. Materials are included. Tuition assistance is available.

8:30 – 10 a.m.
Su8.95 Monkey Around
Students will learn about monkeys and their world. They’ll play like monkeys and use lots of materials to make monkey art.

Su8.96 Dance & Art
Students will explore patterns of time, space and rhythm through creative movement and mixed-media art projects.
Ages 5-6 / Sandy Biery

Su8.97 Puppet Theatre
Students will make puppets of people and animals. Then they’ll create a stage to put on a puppet performance.
Ages 6-8 / Kat Ross

Su8.98 Plaster Piles
Students will explore new materials and basic forms such as mountains, trees and animals. By using a base for the objects, each sculpture will be dipped and covered with plaster then painted.
Ages 7-9 / Ruby Neri

Su8.99 Drawing Optical Illusions
Students will learn to draw objects and places in a realistic way. The art term trompe l'oeil means to trick the eye. Using basic drawing skills they’ll learn how to make images pop off or sink into the paper and create the illusion of space.

Students will explore pictures, stories and the places they take us. They’ll build and create with colorful paint and lots of other materials.

Su8.101 Matisse’s Murals
Students will explore the French painter Henri Matisse and make murals, learning how to use bright colors, shapes, varied scale and collage techniques.

Su8.102 Treasure Hunt
Students will go on an adventure to magical places filled with creatures and surprising treasures. They’ll make maps, costumes and collages of the places they see.

Su8.103 Ceramics
Students will learn hand-building techniques and incorporate materials to create sculptures, making functional and decorative art. Each class offers new experiences and projects so students can take this class more than once.

Su8.104 Wearable Art
Students will design and make paintings and sculptures that can be worn. They’ll use lots of materials and look at artists and designers who have made wearable art.
Ages 7-9 / Kat Ross

Su8.105 Sculpt-Tacular
Students will use traditional sculpture materials such as clay, plaster and wood to make a series of abstract sculptural work. They’ll gain technical skills and practice self-expression.

12:30 – 2 p.m.
Su8.106 Fuzzy Wuzzy
Students will work with fuzzy materials like yarn, pom-poms and fabric to make all kinds of animals and bugs. They’ll also look at cute books and talk about what things are fuzzy and why.

Su8.107 Celestial Critters
Students will explore stars and constellations while making art from mixed-media to murals. They’ll learn cultural, navigational and artistic interpretations of the night sky while looking at heroes and animals found there.

Su8.108 Arctic Art
It may be hot outside but inside students will make artwork about the Arctic Circle, glaciers, animals and melting ice. They’ll use lots of cool colors and chilly materials to create arctic art.

Students will learn the basics of drawing and painting. While experimenting with color theory and mixing paint, they’ll use various materials to paint with and paint on.

Su8.110 Pattern-esque
Students will observe bold graphic, textile and sound patterns, and even behavioral patterns. They’ll create original paintings, textiles and prints based on the patterns observed and found in our environment.
Ages 7-9 / Christopher Michlig

Su8.111 Make A Movie
Students will write a script, invent characters, make costumes, props and sets then make a short film!

Su8.112 Ceramics
Students will learn hand-building techniques and incorporate materials to create sculptures, making functional and decorative art. Each class offers new experiences and projects so it’s a good class to take more than once.

2:30 – 4 p.m.
Su8.113 Outer Space Adventure
Students will blast off into outer space in rockets they make from interesting materials. They’ll paint comets that glow in the dark, learn about stars and create mobiles of the planets.

Su8.114 Calder’s Circus
Students will create characters and animals using artist Alexander Calder's circus as inspiration. Using a variety of recycled materials we'll make our own circus fun.
Ages 5-6 / Sandra Gallegos

Su8.115 Rockets Comets & the Milky Way
Students will blast off into outer space in rockets made from interesting materials. They’ll paint comets that glow in the dark, learn about stars and create mobiles of the planets.
Ages 5-7 / Emilie Halpern

Su7.116 Boats & Bridges
Students will learn how to design and build sturdy structures. They’ll build boats and test if they can float and see how much weight their bridge can hold.
Ages 6-8 / Christopher Michlig

Su8.117 Drawing Portraits & Characters
Students will learn techniques of art making while discovering characters and personalities within themselves. Portrait painting will be combined with storytelling, character building and making comic books.
Ages 7-9 / Hataya Tubtim

Su8.118 Stop Motion Animation
Students will be introduced to basic animation concepts, using techniques of stop motion animation. They’ll animate objects, sand, clay and their own bodies to produce a stop motion video.
Ages 9-11 / Michael Markowsky
