Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists Film Screening
Join us for a free screening of Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists, an award-winning documentary presented in conjunction with The Making of Personal Theory: Mysticism and Metaphysics in the Works of Sara Kathryn Arledge, Charles Irvin, Jim Shaw — the Armory's current exhibition that takes notions of “the mystical” as an entry point to consider daily encounters that are marked with eccentricity, the surreal, and a dream-like passage of time.
Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists is the story of the artists that emerged from the Hyde Park Art Center (1966-1973). It brings to life the milieu of Chicago in the mid-1960s into the early 1970s and showcases the influence of the Imagists’ work in contemporary figurative art today. Themes in the narrative include the Imagists’ emergence within the national context of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, the rise and fall of taste within art history, and the uncharacteristic equality afforded to women artists among members of this group.
