The Armory's award winning after school and weekend art classes for teens age 12 to 18 inspire thoughtful investigations of traditional techniques and contemporary art ideas—perfect for AP Art students, or for teens who simply love making art. From Photoshop to fashion, from ceramics to cartooning, from painting to photography, Armory Center for the Arts is your community art school. Nonprofit and donor-supported, we are the region’s leading institution for contemporary art exhibitions and community arts education. Armory Winter Studio begins January 14.

Artsy Comics & Caricature (Ages 12-14)

Artsy Comics & Caricature

Create amusing comics with simplified or exaggerated caricatures in your own style as you explore the many ways to tell stories through image and text. Learn about character development, proportion, story structure, and storyboarding. Also experiment with forms of social comedy and visual wit to complete an artsy comic book by the end of the course. Learn about the history of comic book art and caricature drawing by comic artists like Al Hirschfield, Tillie Walden, and Chris Ware.

DIY Printmaking & Design (Ages 15-18)

Learn about transferring images using screen printing, a process made famous by artists like Andy Warhol. Learn numerous fun and simple techniques to print on paper, shirts, posters, and other surfaces. Teaching Artist Sergio Hernandez studied screen printing under master printers Kris Pilon, Jon Miner, and Stan Baden, and is founder of the street-wear brand The Zombie Movement.

Painting

Create your own unique paintings while learning foundational skills such as color mixing, brushwork, and composition techniques. Emphasis is placed on choosing subject matter and articulating individual visions. Design, Dye, & Sew

Design, cut, and sew your own hand-dyed fabric into one-of-a-kind wearable and original pieces. Express your personal style through hand and machine sewing, fabric dyeing, and transforming salvaged clothing. Learn technical elements of working with dyes, including the intricate Japanese shibori methods of resist dyeing.

Figure Drawing

Boost your drawing skills with this essential class in observational drawing of professional (clothed) figure models. Learn anatomical proportion, line weight, shading techniques, and composition as well as the placement of the bones, movement of muscular mass, and the shading of the skin. Experiment with different media and techniques. Study figure drawings by artists like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Titian, and John Currin.

Stop Motion Animation (Ages 12-14)

Stop Motion Animation

Experience the animation process from start to finish, from character design to storyboards to creating a final animation work with sound. Using claymation, cut paper, collage, drawing, and pixilation, lets experiment with historic animation methods such as zoetropes and flip books to animate images. Learn about the exciting history of animation while we animate for the sheer fun of it. Beginning and advanced students welcomed. We also offer a Tuesday evening Stop Motion Animation class.

Multimedia Messaging

 

Visual artists use text in multiple ways, and this class explores and develops your individual voice through the power of language in art through the use of letters, numbers, words, and symbols. Using a wide variety of materials, we will explore social issues, identity, and humor using language to convey message.  We will learn various painting and printing techniques and at the end of class we’ll take home an array of stencils, collages, vinyl wall graphics, and printed t-shirts.

In this essential class for the art student, you’ll explore personal style and improve your photographic ways of seeing.
