Textile Design
Sundays (2 class meetings)
March 4 and March 10
1:00-4:00 pm

This workshop provides a basic background for anyone who wants to design their own textiles. Learn how to take any design, even your own original drawing or digital design, and turn it into a repeating pattern on fabrics, clothing, wall coverings, etc. You’ll print your own unique printed fabrics. Learn about pattern repeats, interactions of color and design, basic fabric design principles, and methods to screen print on cloth with textile pigments. Fabric stencils and stamps will be available but if you want to create a stencil with your own original design, bring your art to the first session, and the teacher will create a fabric stencil from that design for you to use in the second session.

Introduction to Organic Indigo Dyeing & Shibori
-

Intro to Organic Indigo Dyeing & Shibori
Sundays (2 class meetings)
March 18 and March 25
1:00-4:00 pm

Explore indigo vat dyeing and Shibori resist techniques to create beautifully patterned textiles. Learn how to make your own vat of organic indigo dye. Experiment with Shibori, an intricate version of “tie dye” resist. Rather than treating cloth as a 2D surface, with Shibori it is given a 3D form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or plucking, and twisting. Everyone will get to make an organic indigo starter to take away and make your own vat at home. We’ll have some fabric available, but recommend bringing 100% cotton, hemp, or linen fabric, undyed or a small clothing item to put in the vat. You’ll come away with a dyed, upcycled garment or fabric to make into a scarf or pillow.
