Creative Writing: Pandemic FictionSession #1 (June 14 - July 10)
In ten weeks, we will aim to write a short story or stories. Each class will open with a discussion and move into writing prompts and exercises. The world over, people are changing the way they move through their lives and the way they think. We all know this period of deep change will mark us forever. It is hard to think about or write about a crisis from the center of it. But we can use this extraordinary moment as a diving board into imaginary worlds we might never have had the courage to discover before. What is it like to be a large family who lost their home? Or a protester who lands in jail? Or an elderly widow whose best friend is a cat? Or a band of kids who secretly ride their skateboards at night delivering food to the hungry?
We will read aloud and learn what is working in our favor and what isn’t. When the story is finished you will staple it into a booklet or print a few copies for a zine. Drawings might accompany the words or not. Whatever form the story takes, the result will be a slice of this period, something to find in a drawer weeks, months, or years from now.
