How can we focus our minds creatively in our current, distraction-rich world?
By writing in a group setting. In fact, meandering and digression can be the secret ingredients to great writing. You find a beginning and let the story unspool, creating its own patterns and shapes. Then you take a step back and organize it, revising until you find meaning that makes sense to you and others.
Bring a project you’ve been working on, or start from scratch. We will spend much of our time writing, responding to exercises and prompts, then reading and discussing. Reading is aloud is always optional. Some close readings of Elizabeth Strout, Toni Morrison, Nicholas Baker, and James Baldwin, among others, may be included. Halfway through the session, we will set goals for finishing, be it a short story, an essay, a few poems, or a chapter of a longer book.
Masks are required inside the Armory for all students and visitors. With few exceptions, students age 5 and up must show proof of full vaccination on the first day of class. Please read our onsite class safety protocols here.
