2020 Events

Halloween morning, join us for a free, all-ages workshop led by Armory teaching artist Austyn de Lugo. In this collaborative, intergenerational workshop between the Armory and 18th Street Art Center, we will examine our own representations of the self, family portraits, and our family histories as we draw inspiration from German artist Annegret Soltau. Using a combination of techniques such as collage, as well as sewing with needle and thread, we will re-assemble and create new versions combining our past histories and current lives in one completed collage. We will be coming together through education and art practice, celebrating knowledge and ancestry, as organizations from the Eastside and Westside of Los Angeles work together to offer this fun and meaningful workshop on the morning of spooky Halloween!

Recommended Materials

1. Copies of family photos, letters, recipes, childhood artwork, recent photos, anything you would feel comfortable cutting up! If you do not have access to a photocopier or copies of these documents, you can gather images from magazines, newspapers, old books, etc…to use for your collage.
2. Paper, glue, needle and thread (optional, recommended for older students).

About the Instructor
Austyn de Lugo (he/him/él) is an artist working in collage, textiles, and painting. His work is influenced by political portraiture, family photographs, floral photography, and decorative arts. His current body of work draws from his family’s history in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, as well as from revolutionary movements in the Caribbean. He considers the United States’ relationship with its colonies in the Caribbean, and imagines how tropicality can be used as a site of political resistance. Austyn has exhibited work in the United States and abroad. In 2017, he was the Artist-in-Residence at the Fundación Sebastian in Mexico City.

Historia familiar: Costura & Collage

Acompáñenos en un taller de una hora dirigido por el artista docente Austyn de Lugo. En este taller intergeneracional colaborativo entre el Armory Center for the Arts y 18th Street Arts Center, examinaremos nuestras propias representaciones del ser mismo, los retratos familiares y nuestras historias familiares mientras nos inspiramos por la artista alemana Annegret Soltau. Usando una combinación de técnicas como el collage, así como la costura con aguja y hilo, vamos a volver a montar y crear nuevas versiones que combinan nuestras historias pasadas y vidas actuales en un collage completo. ¡Nos reuniremos a través de la educación y la práctica del arte, celebrando el conocimiento y la ascendencia, mientras organizaciones del este y el oeste de Los Angeles trabajan juntos para ofrecer este divertido y significativo taller en la mañana del escalofriante Halloween!

Este taller fue apoyado a través de una asociación con 18th Street Arts Center y el Armory Center for the Arts con el objetivo de mejorar los programas educativos de cada uno y conectar los lados este y oeste de Los Angeles.

Materiales
Copias de fotos familiares, cartas, recetas, obras de arte de la infancia, fotos recientes, cualquier cosa que te sientas cómodo cortando! Si no tienes acceso a una fotocopiadora o copias de estos documentos, puedes recopilar imágenes de revistas, periódicos, libros antiguos, etc… para usar para su collage. Papel, Pegamento, Aguja e hilo (opcional, recomendado para estudiantes mayores).

Austyn de Lugo es un artista que trabaja en collage, textiles y pintura. Su trabajo está influenciado por el retrato político, las fotografías familiares, la fotografía floral y las artes decorativas. Su trabajo actual se basa en la historia de su familia en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses, así como de los movimientos revolucionarios en el Caribe. Considera la relación de Estados Unidos con sus colonias en el Caribe, e imagina cómo la tropicalidad puede ser utilizada como un sitio de resistencia política. Austyn ha exhibido trabajos en los Estados Unidos y en el extranjero. En 2017, fue el Artista en Residencia de la Fundación Sebastián en la Ciudad de México.
