Batchelder Tile Making Workshop with Anais Franco
Experience the art of making Batchelder tiles with all the ways to hold tender this land exhibiting artist Anais Franco. This hands-on workshop will explore the process of designing, carving, and glazing, inspired by the work of Ernest Batchelder, a Pasadena-based American Arts & Crafts designer and educator known for his decorative tiles.
Developed in collaboration with the Armory’s Studio Department, this workshop invites collective making as a space for reflection and post-Eaton Fire healing.
Tuition is $15. All materials are included. This workshop is open to all ages. We please ask that each attendee be registered, including children attending the workshop. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

About the Artist
Anais Franco is a Los Angeles-based artist working in ceramics, sculpture, and drawing. Her practice explores the intersection of archival and domestic spaces, using clay to materialize shifting perceptions of memory and history. Engaging with themes of ecological restoration and cultural ambivalence, she examines the evolving landscape of the Manzanar Internment Camp, where nature and reconstruction shape new narratives. Through tile-based works, drawings, and sculptural objects, Franco investigates patterns of documentation, boundaries, and reclamation. Her work challenges material expectations, evoking the past through unexpected juxtapositions and transformative processes.
