Topografia de uma cidade grande is an ongoing, participatory, internationally-itinerant project by French artists Dominique Kippelenthat invites the public to explore and question the contemporary representation of "the city" in all its dimensions—social, historical, poetic, and more.

For this local iteration, Kippelen has collaborated with Pasadena's Side Street Projects over the past several weeks to host a series of community art workshops aboard the organization's renowned mobile woodworking vehicles. During these workshops, participants sketched and built simple objects constructed from locally-sourced wood that represent their notion of Pasadena and Los Angeles as both "city" and "home."

These objects will be on display in the Armory's Community Room alongside Kippelen's growing collection of community-made objects from past Topografia workshops held in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo (Brazil), Strasbourg (France), and Karlsruhe (Germany), as well as other cities around the globe. This exhibition reflects the ultimate idea behind Kippelen's project — to realize, over time, a vast installation of community-built objects made with enthusiasm, sincerity, passion, and pleasure, creating a new territory that mocks frontiers, links people, and provokes astonishment.

This exhibition runs from Tuesday, June 19, through Friday, June 22. Exhibition hours are from 12:00-5:00 pm. Please join us for a public reception with the artist on Thursday, June 21, 6-8 pm. The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public.
